Veneers are the ultimate test of a dental designer. They must be thin enough to be conservative yet strong enough to survive clinical function. Digital design enables levels of precision and predictability that freehand waxing cannot match.
Design Protocol
1. Smile design: Digital Smile Design establishes tooth proportions, shapes, and arrangement based on facial analysis.
2. Virtual mock-up: Designed veneers are exported for 3D-printed mock-up try-in.
3. Preparation guide: If tooth reduction is needed, a prep guide is designed from the mock-up.
4. Final design: Veneers designed with 0.3-0.5mm minimum thickness, proper interproximal contacts, and natural surface texture.
5. Manufacturing: Pressed lithium disilicate remains the gold standard for veneers. Milled zirconia is used for thicker restorations.
